Painting
Laura Hohlwein’s colorful, monumental abstract oil paintings are meditations on the beauty and mutability of space, time, and individual experience.
For Hohlwein, a pantheist, all things are contained by a larger, boundless, natural, energetic field, which itself is also ever in flux. The field is alive and change is at play.
At whatever scale, any containing body is itself also contained. Hohlwein is very moved by this simple, fundamental truth and finds painting the best art for exploring this idea; the language of painting is, by its own nature, the language of object and field.
Impressionist Monet once said he doesn’t paint buildings or people, but the air between them. Hohlwein does the same but hers is a metaphysical air – an intuited space of presence and transmutation.
Hohlwein’s paintings are infused with emotion and memory. Hints of landscapes, trees, homes, appear and dissolve, as they might in remembering, forgetting, dreaming. What abides is the transcendent, emotive field of color - as the visible and the invisible exchange places in the vivid, abiding universe.
